The project

Oxygen is considered a medicine and is therefore often used to treat patients in various health facilities. Oxygen delivery to hospitals takes place through medical gas networks and is delivered to them either in gases or in a liquid state. Oxygen consumption only in Greek hospitals is estimated at around € 60 million per year and is much higher worldwide. The use of oxygen is done through special devices that regulate its flow and depending on the age, physique, and condition of the patient, both different amounts and different durations are administered. It has been found that more than 25% of the average oxygen consumption in a hospital comes either from the negligence of the nursing staff or from the inability of patients to use these devices properly.

In conclusion, there is often misuse in the duration of delivery, or in the amount - flow of oxygen, but mostly you fail to stop oxygen delivery when this is not required. The main object of the project is the design, development, characterization and verification in the field of an original oxygen supply control device. The system will be a global innovation and will solve the chronic problem of misuse of oxygen in hospitals, resulting in a reduction in its consumption. The device will consist of MEMS ( MicroElectroMechanical System ) pressure sensor compatible for use in oxygen and sterilization capability, which will perceive the patient's breathing. In the Data Processing and Management subsystem, intelligent algorithms will be implemented that will allow the device to be adapted in different cases and the local processing and storage of data. The device details will be displayed on a screen. The Energy Management subsystem will allow the autonomous operation of the device and the maximization of the battery life while the Wireless Communication subsystem will implement the wireless data transmission.

The project will be carried out collaboratively by the companies ESS and SAMARAS who have additional specializations for the development of the research result of the project. The ESS has a high specialization and expertise in the field of sensors MEMS and embedded systems and wireless networking devices on platforms IGT. The SAMARAS specializes in the manufacture and installation of systems for medical and other specialty gases, creating high-quality products based on innovative technologies and automation. The implementation of the project will lead to the development of new innovative technological results with significant excellence in their individual fields, as their characteristics will be beyond the current technological weighting. The original oxygen supply control device will be a global innovation that will lead to a significant reduction of resources in health units while it will allow the creation of a variety of new applications and services in the field of health by exploiting and utilizing the data that will be recorded.

The actors involved in the project will enhance their know-how in their areas of action while intending to co-operate and utilize its results, enhancing their extroversion and enhancing their competitiveness. Immediately after the completion of the project, the industrialization of both the overall prototype and its subsystems will be implemented, resulting in the creation of different products ready for commercial sale in mass production in the world market. In this way, the extroversion of the actors will increase and the dynamic development of exports will be realized. The production line of the final product will be implemented in Greece, which is a pioneer as it will be the first corresponding production line in Greece. The direct cooperation of the institutions will create an internal value chain, which will be returned many times to the local community as new jobs of highly qualified scientists will be created.
